Welcome to a space designed for ideas that move people to create wonderful art.

This workshop will cover:

Core Steps in Natural Dyeing

  • Scouring (Preparation): Clean fibres (protein like wool/silk or cellulose like cotton/linen) by simmering with soap and soda ash to ensure even dye absorption.

  • Mordanting (Fixing): Treat fabric with a substance—usually aluminium sulphate (alum) for bright colours or iron for darkening—to help the dye adhere permanently. Without this, colours may wash out.

  • Dye Extraction: Simmer natural materials (roots, bark, flowers) in a pot of water for 45–90 minutes to release pigments, then strain to create the dye bath.

  • Dyeing (Immersion): Submerge the wet, mordanted fabric into the dye bath. Simmer gently (avoid boiling wool) for 30–60 minutes for colour, allowing it to cool in the pot, sometimes overnight, for deeper shades.

  • Rinsing & Drying: Rinse thoroughly in cool water until the water runs clear and dry away from direct sunlight.
