Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar say Yes to the Voice
The board of the Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar Aboriginal Corporation (WKSN) resolved this week to fully support a Voice to Parliament.
The corporation will support the Yes campaign with member and community forums, which will provide WKSN members with opportunities to ask questions and learn more about what the Voice will mean for our region.
WKSN is one of six regional corporations established as part of the South West Native Title Settlement. It has been described as “Australia’s first treaty”, and provides a foundation for nation-building.
The corporation was formed after being endorsed by members of the Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar agreement group in 2021.
It is now the recognised voice for Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar people when working with government, business and community sectors.
Since its establishment, the corporation has been building relationships to help maximise the benefits of the Settlement for WKSN people, culture, knowledge land and sea.
“We know that having a genuine voice in government decisions is essential for improving outcomes and closing the gaps,” said WKSN Chairperson Jeanice Krakouer.
“The Settlement is already providing the structures and resources to enable this at the grassroots level.
“We are now ready to support a national Voice to Parliament, to continue progress towards equality and self-determination for all First Nations peoples.
“We will encourage our members to ask questions and learn more about the Voice, but more importantly to speak up and make sure they’re enrolled to vote before this historic referendum.”
