Dual naming of iconic landscapes

Significant landmarks are being given dual names after receiving support from the Indigenous community.

Mount Hallowell will receive the name of Kooryunderup, meaning the place of many bush kangaroos, and Mount Shadforth will also be known as Wakundup, meaning a place of waterfowl.

Parry Inlet will also be known as Kordabup, a place of coming together and a ceremonial preparation area for women.

These are among up to 18 formally proposed dual Noongar names within the Shire of Denmark.

Advice and support was given by the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council, the Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar Aboriginal Corporation, and the Wagyl Kaip Cultural Advice Committee.

This follows the formal dual naming of King George sound to Mammang-Koort, meaning heart of the whale, in Albany.
